WuJian's Bio
Wu Jian was born in Hangzhou, Zheijian Province, China in
1942. In 1961 he began his study of oil painting at Shanghai
Academy of Fine Arts. From 1977 to 1980, he was the lecturer
of oil paintings at The Shanghai College. The artist was then
awarded the honorable position of Professor of Fine Arts at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University where he remained until 1986.
In 1986 Wu Jian moved to San Francisco. He furthered his
art training at the San Francisco Academy of Fine Arts College,
and later at the Art Studies League of New York. His style
reminiscent of French Impressionism and graceful ballerinas
are a favorite subject on the artist's canvas.
Wu Jian’s Paintings have been exhibited throughout
China, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, and the United States.
They have been included in a two year touring exhibition of
Museum NECCA, organized by the New England Center for Contemporary
Art. Wu Jian’s unique blending of classical, realistic,
and impressionistic styles place him to be an artist of utmost
merit, and his paintings stand as testament to many years
of thoughtful study.
“Wu Jian’s recent paintings of ballet dancers
are strangely pensive and provocative. There is a wonderful
tension in these works between movement and rest which go
well beyond the poses found in most academic paintings. Wu
Jian is a painter both of our time and an era past. His pictorial
language is highly disciplined, evocative of the great European
master painters of the 17th and 18th century. This artist
has made a great contribution to the internationalization
of art while retaining rich values that are national and personal”
